Iranian Drone Shot Down in February by Israeli Air Force Was Carrying Explosives for Direct Attack
U.S. President Donald Trump said he was prepared to sustain the response until Assad's government stopped its use of chemical weapons.
In comments to foreign diplomats in Tehran, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is the commander of Iran's armed forces, described the leaders of the United States, France and Britain as "criminals" for ordering the joint assault.
In a sign of mounting regional tensions, seven Iranians were killed in an air strike on a Syrian military base on Monday, which Iran said was carried out by Israel.

"I clearly declare that the president of the United States, the president of France and the British prime minister are criminals", Khamenei said in a speech, according to his Twitter account. Trump asked in his address before ordering the airstrike on Syriam chemical weapons sites.
Syria fired surface-to-air missiles in response to the attacks but Russian Federation said it did not.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg in a statement backed the strikes, saying they "will reduce the regime's ability to further attack the people of Syria with chemical weapons". Russia's military said Syrian air defense units downed 71 out of 103 cruise missiles launched by the USA and its allies. "We have no intention of expanding the front, but if that happens, Nasrallah must know that his fate will not be different from Assad's fate and he will pay the price very dearly", they insisted.
"This massacre was a significant escalation in a pattern of chemical weapons use by that very bad regime", he said of the suspected deadly gas attack a week ago on the rebel-held Damascus suburb of Douma.
Iran's defense minister said on Saturday that the US-led strike on Syria is a violation of worldwide rules and regulations, according IRNA.
In a televised speech from the White House, Trump said "To Iran, and to Russian Federation, I ask: What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women and children?"
It said initial indications were that the precision weapons and meticulous target planning had "resulted in a successful attack". Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov condemned the military action, and then summoned Israel's ambassador to the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.
The Israeli newspaper Haaretz mentioned there clearly was "a high probability the attack in Syria this week attributed to Israel was against an undercover target that reflected that a similar hazard" since the drone incursion in February.
