UFC Glendale: Dustin Poirier demands title shot after stopping Justin Gaethje cold
Who do you think should get the next shot at "The Eagle's" shiny new belt?
Following his thrilling victory over Gaethje, Poirier proceeded to call for a title shot against reigning UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. With a little over three minutes left, Gaethje stunned Poirier with a punch upstairs, and as the fight went to the fence, Gaethje went on the attack. "I've been close to the mountain top, I've been knocked down and I've climbed back over and over again in two different weight classes", Poirier said.
Dustin Poirier hobbled in on crutches after way-too-many kicks made it tough to bend his right leg.
He's a true warrior in every sense of the word and if we're being honest, a genuine crazy-man in the octagon but with time well and truly ticking on his career, enjoy fighters like Justin Gaethje while you can.
Poirier appeared willing to fight on despite the effect it had on his vision and argued with the cageside doctor and referee to continue.
As Gaethje stumbled around the cage, Poirier swarmed in to tag him with combinations before finishing him along the cage wall.
Gaethje's loss to Poirer was named fight of the night, the second consecutive card the 29-year-old has received the honour, and the Arizona native speaks with a level of confidence that makes you believe that he nearly expects to be in "fight of the night" calibre bouts.
Poirier was still ahead on all three cards and left no doubt in the fourth round, stunning Gaethje with the left hand and burying him in a flurry of punches until Dean stepped in to stop it. "He has no quit in him, and I respect that 100 percent".
While it may sound like a far-away possibility with Nurmagomedov seemingly headed for a vast grudge match with former champ Conor McGregor, UFC President Dana White was understandably complimentary of "The Diamond" when discussing the insane match-up at UFC on FOX 29 with Megan Olivi during the post-fight show on FOX Sports 2. The former featherweight contender feels reborn in his return to 155 pounds and has added plenty of poise and polish to his exciting style.
Warriors rout Spurs; Raptors, Sixers win
Asked if this was a statement game, Iguodala (four points, seven rebounds, four assists) said, "Well, we're in the playoffs". San Antonio knows that they're going to have to come up with a better strategy in Game 2 on the offensive end.
