Historic wildfires are raging in parts of Oklahoma

Forestry services firefighters have been positioned in Woodward and Weatherford for potential deployment to any fires in the region.

Clarification: There is one fire in Dewey County, Oklahoma, where the town of Vici is located.

In Dewey County, the Rhea fire has burned an estimated 19,000 acres and is expected to continue growing, officials reported about 7:30 p.m. Oklahoma Forestry Services is supporting the fire with both air and ground assets. An additional fire southeast of Woodward that started yesterday is being monitored and is now in mop up stage. The fire, which had burned 1,900 acres in the area, threatened 800 buildings.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation reported several highways were closed due to wildfires on Friday afternoon.

SH-34 is closed at the US-60 junction at Vici south to Camargo.

Under the governor's executive order, which is in effect for 30 days, state agencies may make emergency purchases and acquisitions needed to expedite the delivery of resources to local jurisdictions.

A top-level management team on Saturday assumed command over crews battling two nearby wildfires after high winds Friday caused the fires to grow to a combined 8 square miles (2,103 hectares) on part of the Cibola National Forest in northwestern New Mexico.

One firefighter was taken to a hospital from the scene of a large brush fire in Armstrong County Friday, the assistant chief of the Burrell Township Volunteer Fire Department said.

Three relief funds have been set up to help wildfire victims.
