US President Donald Trump's personal lawyer arranged for a $US1.6 million payment to a Playboy Playmate to keep secret her sexual relationship with a top Republican fundraiser and ally of Trump, a person familiar with the matter says.

The raid was the result of a tip from Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. election and purported collusion between Moscow and Trump's campaign team.

The number of women that President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen arranged nondisclosure agreement for will reach "double digits", Stormy Daniels's lawyer Michael Avenatti predicted in light of an Federal Bureau of Investigation raid on Cohen.

Elliott Broidy, who helped raise millions of dollars for Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, stepped down from his position as deputy finance chair of the Republican National Committee, the RNC said. If that payment were meant to benefit Trump's campaign, it would constitute felony election fraud. Neither he nor his lawyer responded to requests for comment. Since publication of the dossier, Cohen has vociferously denied that he traveled to Prague, even suing Buzzfeed for publishing Steele's reports.

Haley and the Russian ambassador argued over a possible US military strike to retaliate against Syria.

The news agency said it was unclear whether Mueller's investigators have evidence that Cohen met with a prominent Russian, as the Steele dossier claimed. The raids were partly a referral by Mr Mueller's office. Cohen's alleged communications with the Russians were mentioned several times in Steele's reports, which he shared with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

While Trump had the "utmost interest" in ensuring that the process of preserving attorney-client privilege was respected, so did the public - and anyone who has ever sought legal counsel, Hendon said.

RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said she spoke by telephone with Broidy, and "he tendered his resignation". "We have not spoken since that time", Mr Broidy said in the statement.

Cohen has publicly declared that he would defend the President to the end.

Cohen and the company, represented by Brent Blakely, and Trump, represented by Charles Harder, have asked the court to send the case to arbitration - as required by the agreement.

The New York Times first reported the phone call between Trump and Cohen.

But according to the McClatchy report, Mueller now has evidence that Cohen entered Prague from Germany. The location was selected to provide an alternative explanation in case the rendezvous was exposed, according to Steele's Kremlin sources, cultivated during 20 years of spying on Russian Federation.

Daniels' attorney says Cohen orchestrated a protest against him in Florida, and then mocked the small turnout.

None of those emails, they added, was exchanged with Trump. The dossier makes unsubstantiated allegations of collusion, but they hinge on the Prague trip.
