Secret BioShock Game Reportedly in Development

All that changed this afternoon when Kotaku nonchalantly dropped a bombshell about a new BioShock game hidden in a postmortem piece on Mafia III. Since then, there have been some re-releases and remasters for current-generation consoles, but nothing substantial in the way of a new game.

As Kotaku's Jason Schreier reported, the next game in the BioShock franchise is now in development at a secret studio in San Francisco. "It was all very tight-lipped".

With Ken Levine long gone and many mixed feelings about Bioshock Infinite left behind, the question has remained, when is Bioshock coming back, if at all? Presumably that means Ken Levine won't be involved in the project, as he's now working on an original project at his new 2K-backed studio Ghost Story Games.

Although neither the article nor Schreier hinted at what the secret studio could be, astute observers have noticed that Hangar 13 and the now-defunct BioShock 2 developer 2K Marin are both situated in Novato, California.

"The issue is that Parkside's not ready for lots of people", said one person involved during this investigation.

2K has not officially announced this project, but Take-Two interactive has let fans know that Bioshock is a "permanent franchise". "They're trying to be really smart about figuring out what the core thing is".

A new BioShock game is reportedly in the works at an unnamed 2K studio, according to Kotaku's Jason Schreier. "They're careful about not falling into the same problem every studio has, where they have too many people and nothing for them to do". Not that it's surprising that 2K would return to one of its most visible and valuable series, of course, and it has been five years since BioShock Infinite came out.

Until E3, we'll just have to stick with our imaginations about what comes next.
