Kevin Plawecki’s hand is broken — and the Mets are in trouble

D'Arnaud, who has experienced a multitude of injuries throughout his six years in the majors, appeared in a career-high 112 games for the Mets last season, hitting 16 home runs and driving in 57.

Catcher is a position the Mets are sorely lacking depth early in 2018.

With Travis d'Arnaud (elbow) scheduled for Tommy John surgery, and Kevin Plawecki (hand) set to miss 3-4 weeks, the Mets will turn to Jose Lobaton to start Friday's game.

The Mets announced Friday that the catcher will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery next week at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. "We'll see how things go", NY general manager Sandy Alderson said. But at this moment, we don't have any plans to add anyone other than at the Triple-A level.

Among available stopgaps, two-time All-Star Miguel Montero was designated for assignment earlier this week by Washington, while veterans such as Ryan Hanigan, Geovany Soto and Chooch Ruiz also remain unsigned. They called up Nido, the team's top catching prospect, from Double-A Binghamton on Wednesday after placing d'Arnaud on the disabled list.

"I think we're comfortable for the very short term".

Per MLB.com's Anthony DiComo, d'Arnaud is going to miss the rest of the 2018 season as a result of the procedure and rehab. While a postgame X-ray was negative, an MRI in NY on Thursday showed a hairline fracture.

"Again, I think immediately the answer is no", Alderson said when asked if he feels a need to improve immediately behind the plate. Kevin Plawecki, who has been their primary starter this season, is also on the 10-day DL with a hairline fracture in his left hand.
