Kathua, Unnao rape cases: Rahul leads midnight protest at India Gate

Siddaramaiah Rahul Gandhi

Congress spokesperson Ajay Maken said a candlelight march will be taken out at 12 am from the DPCC office to India Gate.

Meanwhile, An FIR has been registered against rape accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Senger on Thursday at the Makhi police station in Unnao. While a ruling BJP MLA is one of the accused in the Unnao rape case, BJP lawmakers have been demonstrating in support of the accused in the Kathua rape case. This is a national issue, not a political issue.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was apparently caught unawares about the protest, with Congress workers from Delhi and neighbouring areas rushing to the venue on the call of their party leader.

"What happened in Kathua is beyond humanity, an 8 year old innocent was kidnapped, brutally raped by many men, including a juvenile and tortured till she died. We are standing here against that and we want the government to act", he said.

A huge crowd gathered for the march, led by Gandhi, against the alleged rapes of minor girls in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, and Kathua (Jammu and Kashmir), where slogans were raised against the Modi government.

The gangrape and brutal murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua has sent shockwaves across the nation.

"This brutality, instead of being punished, is actually being shielded". Women and girls are being killed and raped. Only an outrage led to action from Adityanath government. "He is not taking action against his ministers who are trying to save the rape accused".

Congress President Rahul Gandhi appealed to the people of NCT-Delhi to join the midnight candle march at India to show the outrage against Kathua and Unnao rape incidents.

Announcing the march, Gandhi had tweeted in the evening, "Like millions of Indians my heart hurts tonight. The women of the country should feel safe", he said.

The matter intensified after the victim's father allegedly died in the police custody on April 9. The 2019 elections are not far away, the people of India will speak out.

Talking to ANI, Leader of the Opposition Azad said "The government is sleeping and so at this time Congress will have to wake them up".

The 2019 general elections are less than 18 months away, Karnataka goes to the polls next month and the BJP's saffron stamp has only grown with each state election so far after the Bihar wallop in 2015.
