Reliance Jio planning to launch always connected PCs with Qualcomm: Report
Reliance Jio has attained unparalleled success with its foray into the telecom industry and mobile phone market, now the mobile network operator is eyeing the broadband sector in India. In the latest development by the company, Reliance Jio is in talks with US-chip major Qualcomm to launch laptops running on Windows 10 OS that has a built-in hardware to accommodate cellular connections. It's worth pointing out that Jio and Reliance are already in talks to bring 4G feature phones. "They could take the device and bundle it with data and content", Miguel Nunes, senior director of product management at Qualcomm Technologies, told ET. A report by ETTelecom says that Reliance Jio is in talks with Qualcomm to bring new laptops with cellular connectivity.
"Since we already have tbook line of computing products, we are always exploring innovative form factors and devices where we can bring tronX experiences, services, solutions, and support to users", Smatron founder and CEO Mahesh Lingareddy said, according to ET.
The company is working with major PC manufacturers for the "always-connected personal computers".
As many as 14 major operators have extended support for this, including AT&T, Sprint and Verizon in the United States, and others in the UK, Germany, Australia, France and Italy. With JioPhone, Reliance Jio wants those people to get on to the 4G bandwagon who can not afford buying even the entry-level smartphones. It now sources these devices from various Chinese original device markets (ODMs). Well, laptops with built-in cellular connectivity options would actually be appealing to a lot many, because with the current laptops, we have to either plug-in a 3G/4G dongle or connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot to get Internet connectivity on the laptop.
As per Counterpoint data, close to five million laptops are sold every year in India with majority connecting to either enterprise or home or public WiFi spots. The firm further mentioned that even with a million laptops, the 4G networks could charge Rs 300-Rs 1,000 a month, which means operators could generate a whooping Rs 30 crore to Rs 360 crore a month. The company says there is value in this new segment especially for retailers and telecom operators.
