Uber CEO Says Self-Driving Cars Are 'Student Drivers'
Careful not to wind up on the wrong side of a rider or driver's privacy or catch heat from the government, Uber also announced that it's teaming up with the Washington D.C. Departments of Transportation and For Hire Vehicles and non-profit SharedStreets to create new standards for public-private collaboration and the exchange of transport-related data.
Uber stated it considers bicycles and public transport for an easy method to cut back on traffic and environmental congestion.
The ride-hailing company, which said on Wednesday it will add new services, including car-sharing and train tickets, is looking to be virtually a one-stop transportation shopping app. This new service opens even more doors for your transportation needs; literally.
Jahan Khanna, head of product, mobility at Uber, said: "Having a greater variety of transportation modes at your fingertips helps make it increasingly easy to live without a auto. We're excited to partner with Masabi to incorporate transit as an option in the Uber app". "By sharing our aggregated and anonymized trip data, Uber can help inform decisions about how to adapt existing infrastructure and invest in future solutions to make our cities more efficient", said Rob Khazzam, general manager of Uber Canada in a April 11th press release.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the slew of new collaborations it announced yesterday shows the company wants to be a partner with cities where it operates, as well as "solve the problem of auto ownership".
The string of safety measures is an attempt by CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, who took the top job in August last year, to refurbish Uber's image and put several scandals behind the company following eight years of former CEO Travis Kalanick's pugnacious leadership.
The partnership with Getaround will be dubbed "Uber Rent", and will be piloted in San Francisco before a wider roll-out.
This news comes on the heels of Uber's acquisition of the bike-share company Jump.
