Strawberries Top the "Dirty Dozen" List of Fruits and Vegetables With the Most Pesticides
In this July 18, 2007 photo, a customer browses produce at a Safeway grocery store in Livermore, California. More than 80% of the time, these fruits and vegetables contained no pesticides, which can cause adverse health effects related to pregnancy complications and children with low IQs. "With EWG's guide, consumers can fill their fridges and fruit bowls with plenty of healthy conventional and organic produce that isn't contaminated with multiple pesticide residues".
The list focuses on conventionally grown produce.
A single sample of strawberries showed 20 pesticides, the report indicated. Over the years, she says, "the list itself doesn't change much".
Strawberries are likely on many grocery lists as summer nears, but the fruit has topped the list of produce with the most contamination for the third year in a row, according to recent findings.

Strawberries, spinach and nectarines top the Environmental Working Group's 2018 "dirty dozen", their annual list of produce that contain the most pesticides. In addition, USDA said results showed more than 23% of the tested samples had no detectable pesticide residue. One sample of strawberries, for example, tested positive for 20 different pesticides, and spinach contained almost twice the pesticide residue by weight than any other fruit or vegetable. And the organization is suggesting that when buying organic produce is not an option, shoppers should choose conventional foods with lower pesticide residue.
Spinach came in second place, with 97 percent of samples containing residues.
"And the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says today's fruits and veggies are safer than ever".
Two recent studies from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found a surprising association between consuming high-pesticide-residue produce and fertility problems among study participants. The Environmental Working Group looks at six measures of contamination including the average number of pesticides found on samples and the average amount of pesticides found. Avocados have bragging rights this year to topping the Clean Fifteen producer roster. Avocados and sweet corn were found to be the least polluted, with fewer than 1 percent of tested samples showing pesticides or residue.
