Instagram To Introduce “Nametags”: A Copy Of Snapchat's SnapCodes

Focus: Instagram's New Camera Format In Stories

When you take a photo or video of someone in the Focus format, their face will stay focused while the background subtly blurs, making the photo look polished and handsome. The app took to its own Press website to make the official announcement for the launch of this feature which was hidden in previous builds too on Android devices. To find Focus, swipe the carousel of camera names under the shutter until you see Focus (it should be next to Superzoom).

We're not sure how well that would work though, given that videos are in motion and maintaining focus without messy background blurs is a challenge. "Focus mode leverages background segmentation and face detection technology", an Instagram spokesperson told TechCrunch. Back in 2016, Systrom had admitted to the New York Times that "other companies deserve all the credit" for popularising ephemeral images and videos, referring to how Instagram Stories was picked up from Snapchat. Now screenshots and a short demo showing the new feature has been shared online thanks to TechCrunch.

The feature is available on iPhone SE, 6S, 6S+, 7, 7+, 8, 8+, X and select Android devices. Taking a photo or video using Focus mode still permits users of the feature to add filters, stickers or text once you've finished recording. Initially they refused to do so, but after more discussions, Zuckerberg convinced them and the Instagram Stories features was rolled out in 2016. The social media platform is rolling out a "Focus Mode" feature that will blur the background the moment it detects your face in the scene.

To take those flawless "bokeh" photos, you just need to update your app via the iOS Store or the Play Store.
