Governor Brown Agrees to Deploy Troops at Trump's Request

California Democratic Governor Jerry Brown, is not in support of sending troops to the border, but he reluctantly agreed to except federal funding to add roughly 400 National Guard members.

The state's program to combat transnational crime, which targets gangs, human traffickers and firearm and drug smugglers, is now staffed by 250 personnel statewide, including 55 at the California-Mexico border, according to Brown's letter. But in a letter sent Wednesday, Brown says California troops will not enforce federal immigration laws or build a border wall.

Brown said the additional members would contribute to the guard's ongoing efforts, which include "targeting transnational criminal gangs, human traffickers and illegal firearm and drug smugglers along the border, the coast and throughout the state". "Jerry Brown work with the administration and send members of the National Guard to help secure the southern border", White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

The spokeswoman for President Donald Trump has welcomed the decision by California's Democrat governor to deploy 400 National Guard troops for a presidential request aimed at fighting illegal immigration and drug trafficking along the U.S. -Mexico border.

Governors in the border states of Texas, Arizona and New Mexico have already deployed troops to the border.

Brown did not specify how numerous new troops would be sent to the border, where California already has 55 guardsmen. Earlier this month, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown said she would flat-out reject the president's request. Where the additional personnel are located "will be dictated by the needs on the ground", Brown spokesman Evan Westrup said in an email.

On Saturday, Mattis signed an order to send up to 4,000 Guard troops to the border, but barred them from interacting with migrants detained by the Border Patrol in most circumstances.

Brown also contests Trump's long-pushed claims that immigrants are "pouring" over the Mexican border. He said the program is "currently staffed by 250 personnel statewide, including 55 at the California border". He added those were the same reasons he agreed to similar targeted assistance from President Bush and Obama in past years. "It will not be a mission to round up women and children or detain people escaping violence and seeking a better life", Brown said in a statement.
