We're getting another JRR Tolkien story this year

11 April 2018, 07:32 | Justin Tyler

There is a new JRR Tolkien Middle-Earth book coming out later this year

A New 'Lord Of The Rings' Book Will Be Published This Year

The Fall of Gondolin is a new book by J.R.R. Tolkien and was edited and revised by his son Christopher. The book will also have drawings and color plates from the legendary Alan Lee, whose Oscar-winning art direction was instrumental in making Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films what they were.

Garth notes that The Fall of Gondolin is Tolkien's biggest battle outside of the events of The Lord of the Rings. Fortuitously, it will be a crucial missing Middle-earth tale, one that J.R.R.is said to have written while recovering from injuries sustained in one of World War I's bloodiest campaigns, the Battle of the Somme, which took place from July to November 1916. On his journey, Tuor will experience what HarperCollins describes as "one of the most arresting moments in the history of Middle-earth" when Ulmo himself emerges from the ocean during a storm.

"The announcement came as a surprise to scholars of Tolkien's work since 93-year-old Christopher Tolkien wrote in the preface to Beren and Luthien that the book was "(presumptively) my last book in the long series of editions of my father's writings".

"It's a quest story with a reluctant hero who turns into a genuine hero - it's a template for everything Tolkien wrote afterwards", Tolkein historian John Garth said. The Fall of Gondolin includes the first instances of orcs and balrogs and even has an appearance from the sea god Ulmo along with dragons and elves.

Now, readers will learn the story of how Morgoth and his army seek and destroy the hidden city.

The Fall of Gondolin is scheduled to hit bookshelves and devices when it's released on August 30. For instance, the city of Gondolin is referenced in The Silmarillion. The evil being will go up against sea-god, Ulmo, who is helping the Noldor, "the kindred of the elves who live in the city".

There is a lot more to Tolkien's Universe than just those three books and their prequel, The Hobbit - which is why Amazon is willing to spend that kind of money on a series and explore many of these stories that people know little about. JRR Tolkien's The Fall of Gondolin will see the light of day in August, the third in a trilogy of posthumously published stories by the creator of Middle-earth.
