Winnie Madikizela Mandela salutes the crowd

In an interview with The Sunday Mail yesterday, Chairperson of the Parliametary Portfolio Committee on Women and Youth Affairs Mrs Pricilla Misihairambwi-Mushonga said women's organisations were organising a memorable service in Harare to honour the struggle icon. At the dawn of our new democracy, Mama Winnie Madikizela-Mandela chose to cast her vote on 27 April 1994 at Phola Park in Thokoza, as a result of her active involvement with the community in the area.

"She served the interests of our people".

She passed away last week after a long battle with illness.

She was the fourth of eight children born to two teachers in what is now Eastern Cape Province in South Africa.

At the age of 22, she met and married a young lawyer and anti-apartheid activist, Nelson Mandela. Through it all, Winnie never lost her sense of goal, or her defiance in the face of any injustice.

"If there is anything that Mama Winnie hated, it was corruption and this thing, this demon that has been in our midst now called state corruption and state capture".

A traditional dance group performed outside Madikizela-Mandela's house singing and dancing in tribute to the woman seen by many as the "Mother of the Nation". I only found out months later who she was.

Known as the "Mother of The Nation", the ex-wife of the former South African President Nelson Mandela is a lauded hero of the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa.

"The apartheid regime sort to break her spirit by constantly tormenting her family, detaining her without trial and imposing on her a long-distance relationship with her husband and children". She had also overpaid his fees by USD50,000 (Sh5 million), withdrawn from ANC accounts.

She will finally be laid to rest at Fourways Memorial Park, north of Johannesburg.

"I was seething with rage", she says candidly.

He said Madikizela-Mandela and his grandfather late president Nelson Mandela both had a huge impact in changing the country's trajectory.

We're determined to correct the original sin of the violent dispossession of our people's land and its worth.
We're mourning. We're going to her funeral, just to commemorate the queen that she was.

There she was - the woman who had been steadfast against the most brutal oppression, and who had kept the name of her husband alive while he was incarcerated in the abyss of inhumanity - suddenly being rejected by the man who was loved the most by the world. This was the exact location that Madikizela Mandela visited in Houston in 1981. The ANC was banned and she wore the ANC colors as a headdress.

Dignitaries, who attended the service, included musician Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Madiba's long-time friend George Bizos, among others.

Madikizela-Mandela's reputation had been severely damaged by a speech she gave in 1986 endorsing "necklacing" as a punishment for traitors to the ANC's cause. "Learning from her, and in respect of the current context, we have mobilised our democratic forces to do everything possible to enhance our capacity to fight actively against poverty, unemployment and inequality, and eliminate anything that threatens to weaken that capacity", Ramaphosa said. History-and obituary writers-have been far kinder to Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan and even Nelson Mandela, while Madikizela-Mandela's role in controversies, rather than in the fight against apartheid, has been magnified.
