Ruckus in Gujarat Assembly as Congress, BJP exchange blows

Gujarat Three Congress MLAs suspended for creating ruckus in Assembly

(G.N.S) Dt. 14 Gandhinagar The Gujarat Assembly witnessed a ruckus on Wednesday as the members of the ruling BJP and Opposition Congress came to blows. The trouble began when senior Congress legislator from Jamnagar Vikram Madam tried to raise a point of order concerning the deaths of two children in the Asaram Ashram in 2008. When Maadam was not allowed to speak, Der stood up in his support and asked Speaker Rajendra Trivedi to let him speak. Following this, Congress legislators Ambrish Der and Virji Thumar rushed to the well and raised objection with the Speaker. Tempers flared quickly but just when it appeared that it would remain a verbal confrontation, a Congress MLA - Pratap Dudhat and BJP's Jagdish Paanchal got engaged in a fist fight.

Another Congress legislator, Baldevji Thakor, was suspended for a year for an incident that allegedly took place in the lobby of the Assembly. "The Congress MLA not only insulted the Speaker but also became violent in the House", Patel told reporters.

The zero hour on Wednesday witnessed fierce arguments, as members started hurling expletives at each other; while Mr. Dudhat hit BJP MLA Jagdish Panchal with his belt as both were engaged in exchanging blows and slaps.

"This is a shameful incident which has never happened in the history of Gujarat assembly. I do not even know what I was being suspended for", he said.

This enraged Congress' Dudhat, who attacked BJP's Panchal with the rod attached to a microphone.

When the House reconvened at around 3.55 pm, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel moved a proposal to suspend Dudhat and Der for three years and Thakor for one year.

Panchal, along with other BJP MLAs, registered an official complaint with the Speaker. Lawmakers Ambrish Der and Pratap Dudhat have been suspended for three years while another MLA has been suspended for one year. "Our members were not allowed to speak in the House and when they tried, they were provoked by the ruling party members", said Leader of the Opposition Paresh Dhanani. He objected that the leader of the opposition should understand the limitations of time for a question.
