Trump changes mind about raising age limit on guns

DeVos struggles with school safety specifics

The White House on Sunday vowed to help provide "rigorous firearms training" to some schoolteachers and formally endorsed a bill to tighten the federal background checks system, but backed off President Donald Trump's earlier call to raise the minimum age to purchase some guns to 21 years old from 18 years old.

She made the case that Trump was focusing on proposals that had the most support, while continuing to push for other measures.

The climbdown was striking. Pat Toomey, a Pennsylvania Republican, for not including the age hike in a gun bill. "He came up to the general public and said to the Congress, 'Oh, the NRA has a lot of pressure on you, has a lot of effect on you, but not on me so much.' And then he met with the NRA".

But it's no surprise that Trump's rhetoric gave way to the tricky realities of gun politics.

Since the Parkland school shooting, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students such as Hogg, as well as his colleague Emma Gonzalez, have become national gun-control activists.

Among those ideas, which Trump had expressed vocal support for in a February 28 meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers, is raising the age on gun purchases, universal background checks and taking guns from those identified as a security threat without consideration of due process.

Terror group ISIS, the White House said, has lost almost 100 per cent of its former caliphate while more than 50 per cent of the territory liberated from ISIS has been liberated under the Trump administration, it said. A White House official said Trump still wanted stronger background checks but recognized the risks of alienating his supporters.

The Washington Post estimated it would cost a billion dollars to arm and train 20 percent of American teachers. Trump said. "The only way to solve the drug problem is through toughness".

NRA leaders put up a pro forma fight. It's certainly not universal ― gun groups like the NRA still hold significant political sway, and their membership reportedly spiked after Parkland, as it has during past shootings. The reality is, it could be helpful.

Hogg also pointed out that talk about gun control, in the absence of meaningful action, is just that: talk. It was good for membership sign-ups.

For his part, Trump lauded the Astros for their charity work and spirit in helping the Houston area recover from Hurricane Harvey, which wrought its own path of destruction throughout the southern part of the U.S. And deadly gun massacres are hardly limited to schools, as the people in Las Vegas, Orlando, Charleston and other communities know.

"Take the guns first, go through due process second".

The Florida Legislature is hardly a bastion of anti-gun zealots.

"They're still outlined in the plan", Sanders said.

By Monday, the talk was about studying the issue, not taking action.

If Trump had stuck to his initial statements on guns, in other words, he could have done so without significant resistance from either his base or the country at large.

Democrats were, of course, frustrated. Dianne Feinstein of California. "In doing so, the president stood up for the global norms against the use of chemical weapons", the White House said. "But he can't make them happen with a broad stroke of the pen". She blamed Barack Obama's administration for not dealing with guns when it controlled the House, the Senate and the White House from 2009 to 2011-a dynamic the GOP now enjoys.
