Kittel, whose season got off to a slow start before winning stage two at Tirreno-Adriatico last week, latched onto the wheel of former team-mate Maximiliano Richeze before pulling out of his slipstream in the closing metres while denying a late charge from Peter Sagan.

Overnight leader Michal Kwiatkowski (Team Sky) retained his top spot with one stage to go, though it was far from plain sailing for his team-mates.

The Polish beat BMC Racing's Damiano Caruso (Italy) and teammate Gerraint Thomas (Britain) into second and third resepctively on the final general classification.

"I don't actually know the final result, just that I won, and that's all that matters", Kwiatkowski said. "It was tricky. I had to be careful but I had good feelings today and that's why I could finish so well".

Mikel Landa (Movistar) started the day in a podium place, 23 seconds off the race lead, but his time of 12.24 dropped him to sixth overall and one minute 13 seconds behind the GC victor.

The leading riders all had to deal with a damp course, with early finisher Rohan Dennis (BMC Racing) taking stage victory, while Caruso held on to second overall ahead of Sky's Geraint Thomas, who earned a place on the podium.

Dennis was quickest on the 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) individual time trial in San Benedetto del Tronto.
