Ex-boyfriend of slain Westbury woman arrested, cops say

BREAKING: Nicaraguan News Outlets Report Suspect In BU Student Death Arrested

The fellow nursing students at Binghamton University, 140 miles northwest of New York City, are said to have had a previous relationship.

Authorities with the Binghamton Police Department had said Tercero "had fled" from the United States to Nicaragua before police found Anderson's body during a welfare check Friday.

Nicaragua National Police confirm to ABC News that Orlando Tercero was arrested on Tuesday in connection the murder of Binghamton University nursing student Haley Anderson.

Tercero is reportedly being transferred to a prison in El Chipote.

By Monday, authorities named Tercero as a person of interest.

Nicaraguan police say Tercero was in possession of a Nicaragua passport when he was arrested. Her death was ruled a homicide the next day, after an autopsy was performed.

An ex-boyfriend has been arrested in Nicaragua over the killing of college student Haley Anderson in NY. "The investigation determined that the person of interest has left the United States by worldwide air travel flight, prior to the discovery of Haley Anderson's deceased body", police said this weekend in a statement obtained by ABC News.

"We were a few hours behind him", Police Chief Joseph Zikuski told ABC News. It is believed he has dual citizenship, CBS2's Magdalena Doris reported.

Prosecutors will seek a grand jury indictment against Tercero and once that happens a warrant for his arrest will be filed and the U.S. State Department can make the extradition request with Nicaragua, Press Connect reports. If Tercero is indicted, the district attorney will push for a speedy extradition.

Anderson is originally from Westbury, New York, a town on the western half of Long Island.

In 2013 Nicaragua did agree to extradite Eric Justin Toth, who was on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted for child pornography, but in that case Toth was not a citizen of the country.
