RJD Wins Jehanabad, Ahead in Araria; BJP Retains Bhabua

Bihar bypolls NDA leading in all 3 seats

Araria went to polling on Sunday (March 11) along with two Assembly seats of Jehanabad and Bhabua.

The results of bye-elections in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar will be declared on Wednesday.

The bypolls in Bihar, the first major elections in the state after Chief Minister Nitish Kumar broke away from the mahagathbandhan and tied up with the BJP, is expected to gauge the public response to Mr Kumar's decision to switch allies. Alam, who crossed over from JD (U) to Lalu Prasad's party RJD to contest the bypoll, is the son of Taslimuddin.

Jehangabad SS College has been selected as the counting centre for the counting of votes for the assembly. Sharma had won the seat in 2010 when his party was an ally of the BJP. Counting of votes is underway. Araria and Jehanabad were represented by its lawmakers till they died past year. To dethrone the Saffron party from Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabah seats, arch rivals the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) formed a strategic alliance to counter the BJP.

Bihar, where votes are being counted for one Lok Sabha constituency and two Lok Sabha seats, seems headed for a status quo.

According to election office sources, a total of 28 rounds of counting will take place for results of Araria Lok Sabha seat bypoll necessitated due to demise of RJD MP Mohammad Taslimuddin.

In Jehanabad, the RJD is squared against the JD (U). He recently quit the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and joined the alliance of RJD and Congress. Manjhi hails from neighbouring Gaya districts and wields significant influence in Jehanabad. Jehanabad was earlier represented by RJD MLA Mundrika Singh Yadav while Bhabhua was represented by BJP MLA Anand Bhushan Pandey and byelections were held following their deaths.
