PDP took right decision sacking Drabu: Farooq Abdullah

The spokesman quoted the Rasheed saying "Omer Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti need to understand and accept the fact that it is only because of the United Nations resolutions that people talk everywhere about the J&K dispute". By early afternoon, I again called up the CM's residence and sought an appointment. "I was not accorded the opportunity to explain the context and the content of my speech", said Mr Drabu, who was a key architect of the alliance between PDP and BJP.

He said that he had no formal or even personal communication either from the government or from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) about his being dropped from the cabinet on March 12 and that the manner and method of communicating the decision was shocking.

The decision was taken by the party under chief minister Mehbooba Mufti over his controversial statement declaring that Kashmir wasn't a political issue.

Mr Drabu was axed from the state Cabinet yesterday over his statement in a function organised by the PHDCCI in New Delhi that people were "barking up the wrong tree" for decades as the Kashmir issue was not a political one.

Drabu said that it was made in the larger context of how society in Kashmir has been ravaged and has impaired real-life situations and sensibilities especially of the youth. "I stand informed by the media first as a speculation then as a fact".

Speaking at an event in New Delhi on March 9, Drabu had said, "Don't see J&K as a conflict state and a political issue".

However, politics in Jammu and Kashmir is nothing if not full of surprises - after all, didn't the "nationalist" BJP join hands with the "pro-separatist" (an oft-mentioned charge) PDP for the sake of power in J&K?

Drabu also invoked PDP founder, the late Mufti Mohammed in his defence.

Along with BJP general secretary Ram Madhav, Drabu was involved in stitching together the alliance between the two parties - one of which (BJP) draws its strength mainly from the Hindu-dominated Jammu region while the other (PDP) is more Kashmir-centric in its political outlook. "But Drabu isn't completely blameless - he is not too discreet about his views about the CM and these things have a way of coming back", the leader had said. "It is a setback to the alliance", the BJP leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

"That's simply not my way of being", he said.
