Michael Carrick has announced he will retire from football at the end of the season

Manchester United midfielder, Michael Carrick, has announced his decision to retire from football at the end of the 2017/2018 season.

The 36-year-old was handed the captain's armband last summer after the exit of Wayne Rooney but has only made three starts in all competitions this season.

In January, manager Jose Mourinho said he would be "very happy" if Carrick chose to stay at the club in a non-playing capacity.

"There comes a time when, as much as you like or don't like it, your body tells you it's time to stop playing football. That is where I am at", Carrick said, as reported by the BBC.

"You don't know what you've really got until you are tested".

"It's kind of been sorted", added Carrick. "We re still talking about it to be honest so there is nothing to totally confirm yet but it s looking likely".

He said that a move into coaching at United was "looking likely".

However, after seeing his playing time get restricted to just four appearances this season, largely due to a heart condition, the 36-year-old Carrick has chose to call time on a glittering career.

Carrick revealed this at a press conference at Old Trafford on Monday while previewing the second-leg round of 16 UEFA Champions League clash against Sevilla.

"I need to keep myself fit and ready".

"I understood I'd be getting back fit that I wouldn't be playing as many games as probably I might have done, but that's something that I understood". So far this season, the midfielder has been restricted to just four appearances because of cardiac arrhythmia.

Carrick made 463 appearances for Manchester United throughout his career, winning 18 honours with the club. "There were two or three times when I wondered whether it was worth still playing, but I soon got over that". Tried to work for the team, being known as a team player I think is important.
