Jim became a cult figure thanks to Bullseye

Jim was also a stand-up comedian and school headmaster before becoming a household name hosting Bullseye from 1981 for 14 years.

Born 20 August 1937, he was adopted by Joe and Annie Whittaker and moved from Cheshire to Lancashire.

And his his much-loved catchphrase "you can't beat a bit of Bully" was a firm favourite with fans.

He enjoyed cameo roles in dramas such as Last Of The Summer Wine as well as roles in Jonathan Creek and in Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights.

"And I thought, that's some feeling that he must get after that".

At training college, he met his future wife Phyllis and they married in 1959.

"Nothing for two in a bed" referred to how contestants would win a prize by hitting the appropriate part of the dartboard but would lose the prize if they hit it twice.

In 2011, he said he had learned to "appreciate all the things in life" after suffering two strokes.

Bowen presented a morning radio show for Radio Lancashire between 1999 and 2002 but resigned after making a racist remark on air.

Bowen started out as a teacher but was inspired to take up comedy after watching Ken Dodd perform two shows - lasting a total of seven hours - one night in Blackpool.
