Here Are the DC-Area Finalists for the 2018 James Beard Awards

One of the best chefs in the American South is in Miami.

This is McHugh's third nomination for the award, considered the US food industry's highest honor.

Three San Antonio chefs made the James Beard semifinalist list of 2018 Restaurant and Chef Award, announced February 15 - chefs Diego Galicia and Rico Torres of Restaurant Mixtli and McHugh. The organization announced its pool of five finalists this morning via a live press conference in Philadelphia. Pondicheri chef-owner Anita Jaisinghani had also been named a semifinalist.

In the James Beard Foundation's Journalism Awards, Nancie McDermott of Southern Living magazine is a finalist in the Home Cooking category for her feature "Lost Pies of the South", and Hunter Lewis of Cooking Light is a finalist in the Food and Health category for his "What Healthy Means Now" piece. Both were finalists for this award past year.

Considered to be the Oscars of the culinary award, the awards recognize chefs, front of house professionals, restaurateurs, and media in a broad array of categories. The category is open to chefs in Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Florida and Puerto Rico.

The winners will be unveiled at the foundation's annual gala May 7 in Chicago.

Spoon & Stable's Diane Yang is an Outstanding Pastry Chef finalist, while Steven Brown at Tilia (also a 2017 finalist), Spoon & Stable's Gavin Kaysen, and Ann Kim over at Young Joni are still in the running for Best Chef: Midwest.
