Brand new Raspberry Pi 3 model arrives on Pi Day

14 March 2018, 04:49 | Jodi Jackson

Upgraded Raspberry Pi 3 delivers more power and faster networking

The new Raspberry Pi has 5 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2

Power-over-Ethernet is now officially supported with a separate add-on.

Talking about the specs, the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ is powered by a 1.4GHz 64-bit quad-core Broadcom Arm Cortex A53-architecture processor.

Now, with the release of the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, we're seeing most powerful Pi yet. Owing to the heat spreader and power integrity optimizations incorporated in it, this computer can reach higher clock frequencies at a reduced power consumption rate.

For instance, the brand new Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ might have a confusing name, but it's a clear upgrade over 2016's Raspberry Pi 3 Model B. It is available immediately.

"Today's launch of the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ is our response to that success, aimed at perfecting the board for a wide range of applications".

There are quite a few different Raspberry Pi models in existence, but it's not too hard to keep them straight: new ones are better. Processing power will also improve in the plus model. The chip, which runs at 1.4GHz, throttles down to 1.2GHz if the temperatures exceed 70 degrees Celsius.

Lastly, the Model B+ comes complete with Power over Ethernet (PoE), which hasn't officially been supported until now. Lab tests show nearly a 25 percent performance improvement for 2.4 GHz bandwidth over the Model B. Bluetooth has also been updated to version 4.2 in place of 4.0.

"The new board has faster processing, faster-wired networking and improved wireless connectivity; and with modular compliance certification and the same extraordinary support provided through communities and forums, users can learn, create and bring products to market faster than ever before".

Overall, the latest Pi variant is pretty similar to the last one when it comes to the form factor and plugs. For makers that is a very positive change as it allowed for the entire device to be certified as a radio module under FCC rules - with a significant reduction in the cost of conformance testing Raspberry Pi-based products as a knock-on effect.
