Amazon is recalling six battery packs due to fire risk
AmazonBasics is not only very lucrative for Amazon, it's become a trusted brand shoppers turn to when they want a reliable accessory.
The recall involves six versions of AmazonBasics' portable lithium-ion battery chargers: 16,100 mAh; 10,000 mAh; 5,600 mAh; 2,000 mAh with micro USB cable; 3,000 mAh and 3,000 mAh with USB micro cable.
Amazon offered the power banks for sale through Amazon.com, Amazon Bookstores, and Amazon Pop-Up Stores between December 2014 and July 2017.
According to the CPSC, the battery in the AmazonBasics portable power banks can overheat and ignite, which could pose fire and burn hazards. They measure about 3 inches long by 1.4 inch high by 0.9 inch wide.
So far Amazon reports 53 incidents in which the power banks have been overheating, one including a chemical burn, and four that saw property damage.
A power bank is an external, portable battery that can be used to charge a USB-based device while away from an outlet. They were manufactured by Guoguang Electric Company Limited, of China. The retailer is contacting known purchasers directly. Says the CPSC, Amazon has been on the receiving end of 53 reports from U.S. customers who experienced device overheating. Amazon is handling the recall via a refund; customers can get that refund using either the related recall website or by calling Amazon via the following number: 855-215-5134.
The rubberized or metallic power banks are black and rectangular.
