The global advocacy group Avaaz - a US-based organization launched in 2007 that promotes global activism on issues such as climate change, human rights, animal rights, corruption, poverty, and conflict - planned the protest, which meant finding a way to collect 7,000 pairs of shoes. "It was an emotional moment today".

Over a two week period, Avaaz collected shoes from all over the country.

"I'll travel to D.C. literally wearing my son Daniel's shoes, the ones he wore the day he died at Columbine", said Tom Mauser.

The shoes, which came from family members of victims, celebrities and citizens across the country, were placed early Tuesday morning and are expected to stay until late afternoon, the group said. Staff and volunteers say there are 7,000 shoes symbolizing the number of children killed since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in 2012.

Also in attendance was Andy and Barbara Parker whose daughter, Alison, was shot on live television in 2015 while doing a news report for CBS affiliate station, WDBJ, in Roanoke, Virginia, Avaaz said in the statement.

Pairs of shoes are laid out on the lawn outside of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, March 13, 2018. "People are just coming and taking pictures and just looking at this reflection of gun violence".

Event organizers claimed the 7,000 pairs of shoes - 14,000 shoes altogether - symbolized the 7,000 children killed in the U.S. between December 14, 2012 and March 13, 2018.

The shoes are set to be donated to various charities after the demonstration ends, also on Tuesday.

And, on March 24, there will be another large demonstration against gun violence.
