Barbie may struggle with math. But Mattel has had bigger problems with its line of dolls

A dispute has erupted over toy company Mattel's new Frida Kahlo Barbie doll, with the late Mexican artist's family and a Miami-based corporation arguing over who holds the rights to her image.

Barbie has expanded well beyond the ill-proportioned blonde doll that was released 58 years ago-but not everyone has been thrilled with Mattel's choices to expand the Barbie ranks.

Salma, who earned an Oscar nom for her titular role in the 2002 biopic movie Frida, took to Instagram to express her ultimate eyeroll at the women's rights icon being all dolled up. "How could they turn her into a Barbie", Hayek wrote with two thumbs down emojis, followed by the same message in Spanish.

However, Mattel claims that they properly secured the rights through a Florida-based organization called the Frida Kahlo Corporation.

In a flawless world, we would all rejoice and applaud the fact that our beloved Frida Kahlo is being immortalized with her own Barbie.

The Barbie doll features eyes significantly lighter than the dark brown of Kahlo's, and a space in between her signature unibrow.

But Kahlo's family soon issued a statement objecting to the doll.

Critics have complained that the doll does not reflect Kahlo's heavy, almost conjoined eyebrows or unibrow, and they say its costume does not accurately portray the elaborate Tehuana-style dresses the artist wore.

"The Frida Kahlo Corporation actively participated in the process of designing the doll, Mattel has its permission and a legal contract that grants it the rights to make a doll of the great Frida Kahlo", the company's statement said.

"Mrs Mara Romeo, great-niece of Frida Kahlo, is the sole owner of the rights of the image of the illustrious Mexican painter Frida Kahlo", the family said in a statement.

Frida Kahlo, Amelia Earhart, Katherine Johnson and other accomplished women are getting their own Barbie dolls.

"We will talk to them about regularizing this situation, and by regularizing I mean talking about the appearance of the doll, its characteristics, the history the doll should have to match what the artist really was", Sangri told the Associated Press. Since she died in 1954, her image has generated an array of consumer products, from tequila to lip gloss.

Hayek was not the only one who raised her concern about Kahlo's image being used by a big corporate house.
