Ryan Coogler pens tribute to one of his heroes Ava DuVernay

Ryan Coogler, whose film "Black Panther" took the No. 1 spot to DuVernay's No. 2 film this weekend, was one of the first to congratulate DuVernay and acknowledge her influence.

On A Wrinkle in Time's opening day, Ryan Coogler penned an "ode" to friend and director Ava DuVernay that calls her a "pioneer" and praised her for her passions for "inclusion, equity and representation". "She is all of these things, but sometimes I forget she is human", Coogler wrote, saying that he found out that she lost her father a few years back when she was filming her documentary 13th.

He added: 'Ava DuVernay is someone who makes the impossible look easy. I met her in 2013, but she's one of those people who you feel like you've always known.

Black Panther, however, has swiftly become the highest-grossing film of the year both in the United States and internationally, outstripping its nearest rival, Fifty Shades Freed, by a multiple of five. "She was already one of my heroes, and that was before she took one of the most sought-after scripts in Hollywood and turned it into the best film about Dr. Martin Luther King that anyone will ever make", he wrote.

Ryan Coogler's Black Panther is one of the highest grossing movies of all time, a feat that it accomplished in nearly exactly one month.

The movie, which stars Reese Witherspoon, Oprah Winfrey and Mindy Kaling, came in second place to Disney's other big film "Black Panther".

With A Wrinkle in Time's opening weekend competition including smaller fare like Gringo, Thoroughbreds and The Strangers: Prey at Night, it's not shocking that it was the top performer last night. She's quickly become someone to watch in Hollywood, and she's just released her newest film, A Wrinkle in Time, a major Disney property that is essentially about a "little black girl with glasses".
