At least one person has died in the bus crash, according to the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office. WKRG-TV is reporting that 12 to 20 people have been injured, and that officials say the bus was returning to Houston from a school trip from Disney World. The crash happened at about 5:30 a.m., crunching the bus and leaving the passengers exposed to chilly temperatures.
An Alabama state trooper tells the Associated Press that the driver was killed in the crash.
Mack told AL.com that there was once critical injury and five serious injuries.
Baldwin County Sheriff Hoss Mack confirmed the death, and Major Anthony Lowery said the bus ran off the highway.
Authorities in Alabama say a charter tour bus carrying students on a school trip from Houston, Texas, has plunged into a ravine, with multiple injuries reported.
An image of the wreckage shows the crumpled bus landed on its side below the highway.
Several people were injured and taken to area hospitals, some by air ambulance.
The crash and rescue effort closed down Interstate 10 in both directions near the Florida state line.
Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola confirmed on its website that it had received 18 patients from the bus wreck on Tuesday.
"Everybody is being transferred to a hospital to at least be checked out", said Elliott.
Channelview Independent School District spokesman Mark Kramer said the district had only limited details in the immediate aftermath and was in contact with law enforcement in Alabama to get more information.
Officials said the Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency facility in Robertsdale, Alabama, would be used as a staging area to reunite non-injured passengers with families.
The Channelview High band was traveling on two charter buses, FOX10 has learned, and the bus that was not involved in the accident is heading back home to Texas carrying band members and chaperones. There were reportedly at least half-a-dozen helicopters needed to transport all the injured.
First Class Tours, which operated the bus, said in a statement that the bus was carrying students home from Orlando, Florida, and the company is cooperating with investigators.
Only hours before the crash, the band's Facebook page had been updated to show a large group posing outside Disney World, where the band performed at a music festival on Saturday.
