Japan calls for North Korean steps toward denuclearization

Four days after the surprise announcement that President Trump has agreed to meet the North’s Kim Jong Un by May Washington has yet to hear directly from Pyongyang on the invitation extended by Kim via South Korean intermediaries

He said "North Korea's recent changes are the results of maximum pressure imposed by Japan, the US, and South Korea working closely together".

He returned on Sunday from a visit to the United States, where an invitation was delivered to President Donald Trump from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, for dialogue on the latter's nuclear program. In 2016, North Korea approached the U.S. to request peace talks, but the request was rejected because of a USA insistence that nuclear disarmament must be included in any treaty.

By contrast, the North Korea already has up to 60 nuclear weapons.

The U.S. "maximum pressure" strategy aimed at severely restricting Pyongyang's hard currency earnings through harsh global sanctions has made China increasingly uneasy.

Can the talks take us from the edge of co-annihilation to the possibility of co-existence?

North and South Korea agreed to hold working talks to hammer out the details of the inter-Korean summit, but have not officially spoken since the South's delegation returned last week, Baik said.

The Chinese leader said he wants the global community, including South Korea, to find a political resolution to the Korean Peninsula issues by adding proposals by each country to China's proposal of a "parallel track" approach.

Trump does not care if North Korea's president feels good about some political maneuver. Carranza said the meeting place will be a crucial factor. But they warn the process leading to removal of all nuclear weapons from the area is complex. "Jeju has soul, born of tragedy, and beauty and nature", said Yonsei University Professor John Delury, who led a discussion of possible summit locations on Twitter.

When Suh met with Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono on Monday, Kono asked if the abductee issue was discussed during the South Korean envoys' trip to the North. At that meeting, Kim stunned the diplomats by saying that he was open to talking with the Americans about his nuclear program, willing to suspend nuclear and missile testing to open the way for talks without insisting that the USA and South Korea suspend their joint military exercises that have always been a source of tension.

Beijing is seen as one of Pyongyang's biggest backers, and has hosted a series of multilateral negotiations over North Korea held intermittently since 2003 and attended by China, Japan, North Korea, Russia, South Korea, and the United States.

Very. The US and North Korea have no diplomatic ties and leaders of the two nations have never met. One caveat - Kim is not known to have travelled outside North Korea since he took office in 2011.

But Pence called Kim's offers to cease missile and nuclear testing while not objecting to U.S.

Many people were shocked last week by news of the planned talks between the leaders of the United States and North Korea.
