Gina Haspel will be the first female CIA director if her nomination is confirmed
US President Donald Trump has fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, naming CIA Director Mike Pompeo as his replacement.
The timing of the move was created to allow Trump to put a new team in place in advance of those talks, said a White House official speaking on condition of anonymity in order to discuss a personnel decision.
"No one who had a hand in torturing individuals deserves to ever hold public office again, let alone lead an agency", Human Rights First's Raha Wala said on Tuesday.
Goldstein says Tillerson will miss his colleagues at the State Department and the foreign ministers he worked with.
"We got along actually quite well but we disagreed on things", Trump said on the White House lawn on Tuesday.
One of Mr. Pompeo's signature moves as Central Intelligence Agency director was the creation previous year of a Korea Mission Center focused on examining the North Korean missile threat and how best to manage the crisis. Although some reports indicated Trump had asked Tillerson to step down last Friday, Tillerson's official ouster comes less than 12 hours after he released a strongly-worded statement over Moscow's alleged involvement in the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain. Trump offered no explanation for the change. "When you look at the Iran deal - I think it's awful". Trump wrote in his tweet.
"This is a level of discussion, this president is going to drive this effort, this negotiation, but it will take a team to build out the picture, so that we put the president in the best position so that he can achieve that outcome", Pompeo said on Sunday.
Trump has been mulling plans to replace Tillerson since at least September, according to one administration official.
The president has accepted an invitation, conveyed by South Korea, to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un within the next two months to discuss denuclearization.
President Donald Trump is telling reporters that he made the decision to oust Secretary of State Rex Tillerson "by myself".
A government outsider lacking diplomatic experience, Tillerson arrived at the White House after decades at Exxon Mobile, rising from engineer in 1975 to chairman and CEO in 2006, overseeing vast expansion of the company's operations worldwide.
While Tillerson has been critical of Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential campaign and its intervention from Ukraine to Syria, Pompeo has at times bolstered Trump's view that inquiries into Russian election meddling is a "witch hunt" meant to undercut his presidency. Most pressing of all: what to do about North Korea?
In the next few weeks, the Trump administration will be involved in a high-stakes poker game with North Korea that is highly reminiscent of the backroom dealing that took place during the Cold War or summitry that takes place with China and other great powers. Paid $27.3 million past year, Tillerson has accumulated roughly $160 million in Exxon stock along with $149 million of unvested stock options, according a proxy statement the company filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

OECD warns of trade war threat to global economic rebound
On the likelihood of a backlash against Mr Trump's threatened tariffs, he added: "This could obviously threaten the recovery". Rebounding global business investment would keep global trade growth at about 5 percent this year, the OECD forecast.
