Bears to sign top free agent receiver Allen Robinson

Market for Sammy Watkins not expected to be strong

The Jacksonville Jaguars could have given Allen Robinson the franchise tag, but decided against it. This is a vulnerable spot for them but the team has a ton of cap space and could be letting him set his own market.

And they still might not, because reports Tuesday morning had Watkins agreeing to three years for $48 million with the Chiefs. I mentioned this on the free agent primer podcast we did last week, saying that he wouldn't have competition for targets with the Bears, whereas if he went to the 49ers, he'd be competing for targets with Pierre Garcon, Marquise Goodwin, and even Trent Taylor at times. But he enjoyed a breakout season the next year when he led the Bears with 66 catches and 888 receiving yards and tied for the team lead with four touchdown receptions.

Much has been written about the Bears' fascination with Robinson, who's coming off ACL surgery on his left knee after making one catch in the Jaguars' opener last season.

Note: the restricted free agency period ends on April 20. The 26-year-old Rice product came away with a career-best two interceptions this past season.

Signed last May to a one-year deal, Bradley Sowell proved to be a versatile offensive lineman for the Bears.

Their troubles in the passing game were compounded further by leading receiver Cameron Meredith's 2016 ACL injury before the start of the season. Sowell has 23 starts to his name in six National Football League seasons.

The Bears are not expected to tender an offer to their only exclusive-rights free agent, long snapper Patrick Scales. He was the team's snapper for all of 2016 and five games the season prior.

Knowing their current state, Robinson likely landed in the optimal offense to succeed from a production standpoint.
