Live at SXSW: $4000 3D Printed Homes for Those Who Lack Shelter

A $4000 3-D printed home still has some big barriers to overcome

Using an industrial sized Vulcan printer, ICON says it can now build their single-story home for $10,000 but is working to drop that cost to just $4,000. Their 100% model ensures that every penny of each donation goes to build homes while organization overhead and R&D is covered by private donors such as Y Combinator, prominent venture capitalists, and other leading executives. New Story said "as long or longer than standard Concrete Masonry Unit built homes".

There are countless people across the globe without adequate housing and despite all of the efforts being made by governments and non-profits, there's still a long way to go before housing can be secured for those in dire need of it. ICON, a startup based in Austin, demonstrated a low-priced 3D-printed home that's being presented as a potential solution to this global problem.

New Story is a Y Combinator-backed nonprofit that uses technology and innovative processes to build holistic communities in the developing world that include components like a school, clean water, and income opportunities. Both organization now aim to build a community of 100 homes in El Salvador next year using the Vulcan printer. The roof is the only part that is not 3D-printed. All being well, it is hoped that people will actually be living in the 3D-printed homes by late 2019. The strength of the printed walls are said to be stronger than cinderblocks after a few days of hardening, but the house is entirely habitable after it's been set up. They've found a way to 3D-print 600 to 800-square-foot houses for $4,000 in under one day - and they recently unveiled "the first permitted, 3D-printed home in America".

There are other groups which are working on printing houses. The charity works with local workers, and they say that traditional building methods provide around four jobs for each house. "By working with ICON and leveraging their 3D printing innovations, we're able to reach more families with the best possible shelter solutions, exponentially faster". The technology also tends to reduce waste and manual labor costs. "It's one of the more promising potential habitat technologies". To battle this inadequacy, an Austin-based startup has proposed an answer of building up a house by utilizing ease 3D printing.
