Xbox One X And Xbox One S Updates Will Include FreeSync And Auto Low Latency Mode Support

Xbox One X and Xbox One S will soon support AMD FreeSync displays

Microsoft is adding support for AMD's FreeSync displays to its Xbox One X and Xbox One S consoles soon. "And many reviewers have noted that the average FreeSync display costs less than the average G-SYNC display". It does this by synchronizing the refresh rate of your monitor with your GPU to smooth things out. Announced previous year, AMD's FreeSync 2 extends AMD's FreeSync abilities, chiefly by specifying low-latency HDR support on top of variable refresh. Since most of Microsoft's first-party games have live services for maximum engagement, it's likely that this plan will mesh neatly with its current roadmap. This Mixer controller experience is now only available for testing on the Xbox Insider Alpha ring.

Microsoft has revealed that it plans to introduce FreeSync Display support for Xbox One S and Xbox One X. For those who don't know, FreeSync eliminated the screen tear and support dynamic refresh rate, however, users are required to have a TV or monitor that supports FreeSync. LFC requires support from the graphics driver as well as the monitor, so it will be interesting to see how well the system's mostly-30-FPS Xbox games work in FreeSync mode. This will be especially useful if you are using Netflix or other media apps on Xbox One, as game mode will be automatically switching off when you switch from gaming to apps such as those.

The Xbox Spring Update is bringing support for native 1440p, and support for Auto Low Latency Mode (i.e. TV "Game Modes") - a feature that disables TV post-processing during gameplay - is set to come later in 2018. This is basically a convenience for gamers, as it negates having to go into their TV's settings to enable Game Mode.
