Karti Chidambaram, the arrested son of former Union minister P Chidambaram, today moved the Delhi High Court seeking bail, hours after a court sent him to judicial custody till March 24. Karti Chidambaram's father P Chidambaram was present in the courtroom during the hearing.

The Madras High Court today posted to tomorrow a plea filed by Karti Chidambaram, who is now in judicial custody in the INX Media corruption case, challenging the lookout circular issued against him in the case filed by the CBI.

Stressed on Karti Chidambaram's visits, he said that if the accused did not face any threat then, how did he now fear it in the jail, where there is deployment of large number of security personnel.

The counsel had sought a separate cell for Karti Chidambaram while citing possible threats from "terrorists" lodged at Tihar jail during P Chidambaram's stint as home minister.

However, the court directed the lock-up in-charge and jail superintendent of Tihar Jail to provide and ensure proper safety and security to accused during the judicial custody as per rules. He also sought a separate cell in case Karti was sent to judicial custody. "He [Karti Chidambaram] can not be treated different from other accused persons and can not be allowed to be kept in separate prison", the court said.

The CBI countered it saying there is threat to Chidambaram but not to his son, family or relatives and they are roaming around the country freely.

Judge Rana also allowed Karti to carry his spectacles and medicines as per prescription, subject to the approval of Jail doctor.

It also said his bail plea would be heard on March 15 as scheduled.

After the hearing of arguments from both sides, Karti was sent to custody for 12 days till March 24 and also, his demand for home food was rejected by the court.

The CBI court added that under the circumstances when there is sufficient material clearly implicating the accused in this serious economic offence, it is absolutely necessary that the accused be remanded to the judicial custody.

In the month of May, 2017, the CBI had filed a case against Karti for alleged irregularities in Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media, criminal conspiracy and cheating. The amount of bribe has been reported Rs. 4.50 crore.

The application states that Indrani had told the CBI that she was willing to identify the place where she and Peter Mukerjea had met Karti in connection with the FIPB clearance for INX Media.
