Ford Mustang California Special Gets Updates Inside and Out

12 March 2018, 06:26 | Justin Tyler

The Ford Mustang GT California Special is back this summer!

Mustang GT Performance Pack Level 2

The California Special began as a dealer special edition in 1967, inspired by the Shelby GT notchback coupe prototype, but it was so popular that in 1968 Ford took the reins and built its own factory version.

"Few things are more satisfying than dropping the top on a California Special and taking a drive down the majestic Pacific Coast Highway", Mark Conforzi, Ford designer, said in the release. Those cars looked especially trick with the blacked-out grille and side stripe the modern vehicle honours complemented by fog lamps, a Shelby-styled side scoop and spoiler, and custom taillights.

Besides the paint job, today's reiteration of the California Special Mustang involves a fair share of technology.

"No doubt, 2019 is an exciting year for Mustang enthusiasts, especially fans of our California Special and Bullitt models", said Corey Holter, Ford vehicle group marketing manager.

The 2019 Ford Mustang - including Ford's brand-new addition to the GT/CS lineage - goes on sale this summer. Under the hood is the same 5.0-liter V8 putting out 460 horsepower and 42lb-ft of torque - it would be nice to get a little extra power for a special edition, but hey, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Customers who opt for the special edition auto get a blacked-out grille, exclusive wheels, a lower splitter and a side body stripe.

4 - The black rear taillight panel is adorned with a new California Special badge in red, and it looks great. The wheels are unique machined 5-spoke units. Inside, it comes with synthetic suede-trimmed seats, special logos, contrasting red stitching and a script badge on the passenger-side dash. Ford says that rev-match tech will "ensure smoother and more spirited day-to-day-driving".
