Dalai Lama events in Delhi cancelled, Tibetans shift 'Thank You India' function to Dharamsala

When his comments were sought on the government's note, Dagpo said, "India is host to Tibetan refugees".

On Saturday, the group is to hold a march to commemorate the failed Tibetan rebellion against Chinese rule on March 10, 1959, which led to violent crackdowns and the Dalai Lama's exile, network director Lin Hsin-yi (林欣怡) said at a news conference outside the Legislative Yuan in Taipei.

"Participation by senior leaders or government functionaries, either from the Central Government or State Governments, is not desirable, and should be discouraged", Gokhale wrote to the Cabinet Secretary.

The Tibetan government-in-exile has chose to cancel its two main events marking 60 years in exile of spiritual leader Dalai Lama in New Delhi.

The planned inter-faith prayer meet at Rajghat has been cancelled and the "Thank You India" event, which was to be held in Thyagaraj stadium here on March 31, will now be held in Dharamsala either on March 31 or April 1, he said.

"There was no direct message from the government to call off the commemorations, but it was conveyed to our leadership that perhaps these events should not be held in Delhi", said Tsering Dhondup, spokesperson of the Dalai Lama's Bureau, confirming the cancellations. "His Holiness is accorded all freedom to carry out his religious activities in India", said MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar.

The Hindu had reported on March 2 that an interfaith meeting at Mahatma Gandhi's memorial Rajghat on March 31 had been cancelled.

The Tibetan government in-exile had released a calendar of events to observe "60 Years in exile".

However, few people have experienced the level of Chinese government suppression that Tibetans have, he said.

"It's a very sensitive time for India and China ties and we want to ease tensions", he added. The Tibetan government-in-exile will continue to participate in Swachh Bharat, tree-plantation, Yoga Day and other events, Dagpo was quoted as saying by IE.

Both the events were part of a planned yearlong celebration in India that was announced by the Tibetan political leader Lobsang Sangay in a January press conference in Delhi.

The "Thank You India" event at the Thyagaraj Sports Complex in New Delhi had found specific mention in the Foreign Secretary's note.

Gokhale's note is a reflection of India's cautious approach towards Beijing as it embarks on the task of mending fences with its northern neighbour. Last April, Indian officials gave the Dalai Lama permission to visit the sensitive border area of Arunachal Pradesh.
