PUBG is getting a new map, vehicles, weapons, and emotes in 2018
Today developer Bluehole outlined the roadmap for 2018 PUBG content, pointing to new maps and a bunch of other improvements and additions.
There's nothing that beats the act of letting players mess with new features to find the unexpected fun in changes to the game, and it's very possible the experimental test server will lead to new ideas that neither the development team nor the community sees coming. Marked in the top left as a 4x4km concept, it is half the size of the previous two maps, seemingly without sacrificing the 100 player count, from what Greene says.
The first new map is a 4x4 KM tropical themed island that is looking to offer an, "intense and faster paced Battle Royale experience".
New game modes are also in the works, but the team is still in the "early days when it comes to hammering out all the kinks and details", so no specifics are ready just yet. The plan is to "make them smoother and more reactive to the environment".
"This year we want to involve our players in the ongoing development of PUBG even more than before, and to aid with this we plan to open an Experimental Test Server so we can get your valuable feedback on our feature/content development cycle sooner and for you to have a real impact on how our game changes and develops going forward", the official blog post stated.
Of course, 2018 will see new vehicles and weapons too in addition to improvements to sound effects and animation. In-game achievements and a friends list, as well as squad voice chat, are each going to be added in 2018. Or better. Really, it depends on how much you enjoy being stressed out. Of special interest are reworked parachuting and unarmed melee combat systems, both of which have been heavily criticized.
"Seriously, we are not there yet, but we will be", the post starts by saying. "We also want to improve how the character moves to allow our 3D replay to deliver some truly great content".
The PUBG team plans to further improve matchmaking for Duo and Squad modes, with the goal of supporting a fair and competitive environment. The API will also "allow esports groups and other third parties to create custom games within PUBG".
Future updates will introduce additional preset configurations to choose from and a wider set of aiming options to provide PUBG players more freedom.
