Did you know there's a holiday dedicated to Super Mario? To celebrate the occassion, Google and Nintendo have teamed up to give fans of the Italian plumber something truly special.

Mobile app users on iOS and Android are already seeing a pop-up giving them the option to use Mario the position marker, replacing the usual compass arrow.

A spin-off, Mario Kart, was launched in 1992 featuring the red-capped plumber as one of several playable characters from the Mario franchise in a go-kart-style racing video game.

At the time of writing, despite having the most up-to-date Google Maps app on iOS, the Mario Day feature wasn't yet appearing.

To action this, you need to tap the little yellow question mark button - a familiar mystery box icon to anyone who's played Mario-related games through the years - at the bottom of the Google Maps app. Just keep in mind to practice safe driving on the road-we don't encourage throwing bananas or red shells at other drivers in real life!

Starting today, users will get an option for Mario (driving a go-kart, natch) to take the place of the navigation arrow that represents your vehicle as you drive around. If you're so inclined, you can share screenshots of your route and share it on Twitter and Instagram by tagging @GoogleMaps with the hashtag #MarioMaps. I'm just saying, Nintendo.
