H1Z1 becomes a free-to-play game today

Daybreak Games has announced that it's transitioning to a free to play business model for H1Z1, presumably in an attempt to attract new players and have a shot at competing with battle royale royalty Fortnite and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. The announcement includes links to Steam and Daybreak customer service for those wishing to refund a recent purchase of the game in accordance with Steam's refund policy, with an extra commitment from Daybreak to "work with you to make it right", should any difficulties arise in that process.

It's not a total loss, however, as everyone else will receive the "H1Z1 Appreciation Pack" valued between $30 and $50.

Castoro said that concurrent users aren't the only metric by which his team is measuring the game's success. More details about the H1Z1 f2p initiative can be read below.

Daybreak also announced that it has established a full 15-team slate for the inaugural season of the H1Z1 Pro League, which was announced in October through its partnership with the record keeping organization Twin Galaxies.

"We are very excited to announce that H1Z1 will be free to play starting today", H1Z1 general manager Anthony Castoro said.

The Twin Galaxies Esports Arena, inside Caesars Entertainment Studios, will host the matches each week on a Wednesday, with the exception of Split 1 which'll kick things off on Saturday April 21st, and fans will be able to attend in-person should they find themselves in Sin City. Furthermore, the company has teamed up with Facebook for streaming rights.

"The league's primary focus to engage and support players and fans aligns closely to our commitment to help build the world's community for people to play, watch and share the games they love".

If you check at the time of this writing you will notice the game still has a price tag on Steam so you'll have to wait a little bit longer until the game becomes officially free. Plus, Caesars Entertainment will be the official venue and entertainment partner. Nonetheless, Castoro said that Caesar's Entertainment Corporation, which operates 47 casinos in 13 USA states and five different countries, is invested in Daybreak's success.
