View Slideshow Storm Reid plays Meg Murry in'A Wrinkle In Time. Walt Disney
Meg Murry (Storm Reid), a bright young woman haunted by the disappearance of her NASA physicist father (Chris Pine) four years earlier, struggles in school and at home, keeping emotional distance from everyone except her kid brother, child prodigy Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe). Other fantastical characters played by Zach Galifianakis (as Happy Medium) and Michael Peña drop in to be confounding and leave having added nothing to the story or Meg's life. "So we just had a lot of conversations about what we were inspired by and then what that meant to us growing up and to children now and to the world now". But Ava was really helpful with that and we kind of. interpreted the pages as best we could. Are you kidding? Who doesn't want to work with Ava DuVernay? "[Meg] says to her friend, Calvin, 'Do you trust me?' And he says, 'I trust you.' He follows a girl". If we remove the major categories like Best Picture, Best Director (for DuVernay), Best Actress (for Reid), Best Supporting Actor (for Pine), Best Supporting Actress (for Winfrey or Witherspoon), and Best Adapted Screenplay (for Lee and Stockwell) from the equation, there are possibilities. So if you like the new lovable Meg, you'll have to wait for an eventual sequel (the book is the first of a quintet)... that is, if the movie doesn't flop at the box office. You're not gonna get the dazzling special effects of a feature film from this Wrinkle. When you're there, why don't you do some work?' She said yes. "Ava's going to help me". She's such a leader.
Hollywood is a copycat industry, and people like their safety, but this movie and the diversity of its cast shakes that up a little bit. The audience is told things about the characters - Meg is smart but damaged, Charles is a one of the greatest minds in the universe, Cal is "good at diplomacy"- rather than the characters actually being those things. Even those who respect the message admit that the movie has a formulaic script and falls flat of other movies pitched to black moviegoers like "Black Panther". You can nearly see the emptiness on screen waiting to be filled, and it's nearly shocking that this creative team couldn't make that happen. Again, you look at a human being like Ms. Winfrey and I think you think - and listen by the way, I'm as cynical as they get so I have a side of me that rolls my eyes at all this stuff - but with Ms. Winfrey, I don't know, it seems different.
My guess is that she is well aware that her reputation for powerful, insightful, needle-moving movies like Selma, 13th, and Middle of Nowhere doesn't really jive with this particular endeavor.
Because, as everyone knows, when you're battling with a computer-animated goo monster of pitiless evil, love is all you need. It's not often that we see purely straightforward films that are simply about vanquishing darkness with the light from within us. It'll be interesting to see where DuVernay goes from here, as she's a filmmaker with multiple options at her disposal. Indeed, they help present a "pleasing" adventure that stands "as a clarion call for young people rising up against the forces of cynicism, corruption and wanton cruelty".
