Statewide tornado drill reported to be successful

Northwest Missouri State University, along with the National Weather Service, the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency and local first-responder and law enforcement agencies participated Tuesday in the annual statewide tornado drill.

A storm is classified as severe if it produces damaging winds or hail one inch in diameter or larger.

It gives residents a chance to practice their sheltering plans and be ready in case of severe weather. The "TOR" code will activate tone-alert weather radios that are set to receive tornado warnings, and those radios will broadcast the exercise message.

Fisher also said that severe thunderstorms can produce hail at least an inch in diameter, 58 miles per hour plus winds or can produce a tornado. Severe weather can strike at any time with little or no notice.


Shawnee County Emergency Management tested 66 sirens in conjunction with the drill.

The most fundamental thing you should know are the differences between watches and warnings.

■ If you are outdoors and there is no shelter available, take cover in a low-lying flat area.

Never try to outrun a tornado in your vehicle. Watch out for flying debris.

Be aware of damaged power or gas lines and electrical systems that may cause fires, electrocution or explosions.
