IPL 2018: Gautam Gambhir Named Delhi Daredevils Captain
07 March 2018, 10:59 | Melissa Porter
The DD appointed another World Cup victor Ricky Ponting as their coach and the former Australia batsman backed Gambhir to lead Delhi Daredevils this season. "That being said, I firmly believe that as long as I can't expect the team to do something I can't".
Gambhir said he was looking forward to working with former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting, who is the head coach of the Delhi franchise. DD are yet to win the IPL title and Gambhir's appointment as captain could take them in that direction.
Gautam Gambhir has been announced as the Delhi Daredevils' skipper. The potential of this group of players is vast and it is now up to us to turn that potential into consistent performances.
It is understood that Gambhir wanted a change in environment and asked the Knight Riders not to bid for him during the auction. Gambhir was brought by Rs 2.8 crore during the IPL auction in January keeping in mind the captaincy role, a decision that was confirmed by the franchise on Tuesday. He also added that it is fun to be in a peaceful (Delhi) environment once again. He has always proven himself to be one of the top leaders during his stint with other sides in the IPL. His last season of IPL also has also been very good. It is the drive behind the outward confidence which I think will inspire the rest of the team.
Delhi have assembled a solid looking unit this season and Gambhir is the right choice to lead the side.
"The kind of squad we have, if we play to our ability, it is going to be hard for anyone to beat us". Both Ricky (Ponting) and Gauti have spoken to each other. Japanese firm Daikin will continue to sponsor the DD team for the next three years.
