Flu death toll in DE increases to 28, ties record high

5 new flu deaths match highest total since tracking began; sharp decline in lab-confirmed cases week-over-week

Flu claims 5 more lives, tying highest death total ever recorded in Delaware

Meanwhile, the confirmed death toll from this flu season increased to 118 from 98, the state's Department of Public Health reported.

The CDC said last month that the flu vaccine has only been 36 percent effective.

Three other Arkansas children or teenagers have also died from the flu this season, including two others who were age 5-18 and one child younger than 5.

DE has seen nearly 6,700 lab-confirmed cases of the flu during the 2017-2018 flu season.

The number of flu cases reported during the week leading up to Saturday was less than the half number reported at the peak. And the proportion of outpatient visits for flu-like illness in Georgia during the same period dipped to 6.5 percent, from 11.9 percent. The Department of Health has yet to release data for the last few weeks, so it doesn't know how the season has progressed since the initial decline in flu cases.

Since early January, cases of influenza A have been declining, while cases of influenza B have been rising, which often happens in the tail end of the flu season, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

"We are clearly on the downturn, by all indicators", he said.

"While we believe that flu season has peaked for us in DE, flu is still widespread and at high levels in our state, and will likely continue to circulate for weeks to come", said DPH Director Dr. Karyl Rattay in a written announcement of the deaths. Deaths of children were tracked through pediatrics. Since October, 23,324 people have been hospitalized for influenza-associated complications.

While flu in DE continues to be widespread, the Division of Public Health (DPH) announces single-week flu numbers are finally starting to drop.

The Division of Public Health says people can still get their flu shots.

Last year, the flu season in Wyoming peaked at the end of January.
