“Material failure” appears to be the reason behind the incident involving AHL Dhruv

In a freak accident, three jawans of Indian Army fell off a chopper while conducting the rehearsal for the upcoming Army Day on January 15 in New Delhi.

A video that has gone viral on social media shows a total of four soldiers sliding down the chopper as part of the slithering operation using a rope which is attached to the aircraft.

Following the incident, the Army has suspended slithering operations involving ALH Dhruv till a probe is completed, the sources said.

The incident occurred due to helicopter boom malfunction. As the soldiers start to descent, the rope is seen slipping off the helicopter which results in a free fall.

Three paratroopers have been injured while practising slithering operations from a rope hanging from a Dhruv advanced light helicopter (ALH) here. The troops stationed near the "drop" zone rushed to the spot and ferried the injured to the hospital, officials said. The slithering operations, which involve troops slipping down a rope usually from a helicopter, is a method used to drop troops in an area of action when a chopper cannot land. The ceremony is held every year on January 15 since 1949.

Meanwhile, an inquiry has been ordered to ascertain how the accident took place. "A team from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited that manufactures the chopper is in Delhi for investigation" he said.
