All 162 passengers and crew on board miraculously escaped uninjured.

A passenger plane skidded off a runway and down the side of a cliff at an airport in northern Turkey.

Yucel Yavuz said Sunday that investigators were trying to determine why the plane had left the runway and that the airport would be closed until 8:00 a.m. (0500 GMT; 12 a.m. EST). No passengers or crew were hurt, Turkish media reported on Sunday.

Dramatic images from CNN Turk broadcaster showed the plane dangerously hanging off a cliff several meters (feet) from the Black Sea, its wheels stuck in mud.

The private carrier Pegasus Airlines' Boeing 737-800 departed from Ankara late on January 13.

There are reports the incident couldn't been caused by a bird strike.

Passenger Yuksel Gordu told Turkey's official Anadolu news agency that words weren't enough to describe their fear. The front was down while the plane's rear was up.
