Mets Planning to Sign Former Dodgers 1B Adrian Gonzalez

While the New York Mets have glaring needs at second or third base, they pulled the trigger on veteran first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, agreeing to a deal late Wednesday night, as first reported by USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

Gonzalez, who will be 36 next season, would be a cheap stopgap who would not prevent Smith, one of the Mets' top prospects, from taking over at first base in the team's eyes.

Bruce started 10 games at first last season, but likely will see most of his action next season in right field with 2017 All-Star Michael Conforto starting in center and Yoenis Cespedes playing left.

The Dodgers traded Gonzalez to the Atlanta Braves after the season in a package deal that saw Matt Kemp return to Los Angeles while providing the team with luxury tax relief.

After polishing off a six-year track with the Dodgers in 2017, Gonzalez was dealt to the Braves during a five-player swap in December.

The 35-year-old first baseman is coming off of a down year, during which he struggled to remain healthy and produced a meager.242/.287/.355 batting line with three home runs in 252 plate appearances.

The Mets are looking to give Smith - who hit just.198 with nine home runs and 26 RBI in 49 major-league games last season - a chance to develop a little more.

Gonzalez, whose better days are certainly behind him is the epitome of a low risk, high reward signing. The Mets are expected to officially confirm the deal pending the completion of a physical. A four-time Gold Glove Award-winner, his defense also suffered, as he posted a minus-5.6 UZR/150 and minus-two DRS.

How do you follow up signing Jay Bruce at a bargain?

The Mets are adding some insurance at first base.
