Doctor apologizes for ‘Third World conditions’ in UK hospitals

Authorities have told hospitals to defer routine outpatient appointments and focus on emergencies, the BBC reports.

He thanked NHS staff for their "heroic" job, saying they were working "beyond the call of duty".

Cancer operations and procedures that are time-critical will continue as usual, officials emphasized.

The hospital has advised that it is facing extreme and sustained pressure due to very high numbers of patients seeking emergency medical care.

The MP said: "This latest crisis, which has led to cancelling operations this month, is a new low for the NHS under the Tories".

It was not uncommon for an A&E to have 20 to 40 patients waiting for a ward bed, he claimed, adding: 'In some cases, I've heard of 50 patients in an emergency department waiting for a bed.

The move comes after hospital trusts across England reported huge pressure over the festive period, with one A&E consultant comparing conditions in his hospital in Stoke to the third world.

Some ambulance services have also started asking 999 callers with less serious problems to make their own way to hospital, patients are being put on mixed sex wards and hospital's are bringing Global Positioning System into A&E to help deal with patients.

"Many [NHS trusts] dealing with unprecedented demand, reflecting the recent rise in cases of flu and respiratory illness, the impact of norovirus and - in some places - primary care including Global Positioning System working at more than full stretch".

"The NHS needs to take further action to increase capacity and minimise disruptive last-minute cancellations".

"Short-term fixes, however well meaning, will only get us so far".

In the year 2015/16, around 7.5 million patient appointments were missed according to NHS Digital, but this figure increased to 8 million in the year 2016/17.

Worthing and St Richard's Hospitals remain extremely busy and following the busiest Christmas and New Year period our staff have ever experienced.

Mrs Cooper said a Labour government would create more funding and staffing for the NHS, principally by taxing higher earners.

A looming flu season is putting even more pressure on hospitals.

"We do definitely need a better long term sustainable plan for how we're going to get the right amount of funding into both health and social care", she told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

"Any patients who do have a hospital appointment delayed, and feel their condition is getting worse, should contact their GP in the first instance for support".
