Haotong wows Team Asia captain

Paul Casey

Europe trailed 3½-2½ after day one, but took the lead by winning three of the first four foursomes matches on the second day in Malaysia, at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club.

European No.1 Tommy Fleetwood, who was paired with Paul Casey, claimed a 4 & 3 victory over Byeong Hun An and Kiradech Aphibarnrat.

There was a resounding 5&4 defeat for Henrik Stenson and Alex Levy against rookies Sunghoon Kang and Poom Saksansin in match four while Ryder Cup team-mates Matt Fitzpatrick and Thomas Pieters lost 2&1 to Gavin Green and Yuta Ikeda, who made crucial birdies at 15 and 17 to secure the point.

"I absolutely believe we can win the EurAsia Cup".

Europe entered the match as heavy favorites, but will have to dominate the singles to help give Bjorn a taste of success before he captains Europe in this year's Ryder Cup.

Nicholas Fung and Haotong Li, Asia, def. Ross Fisher and Bernd Wiesberger, Europe, 3 and 1.

"I learn something every second of the day when I'm a captain, but I don't only do that here". I'm not surprised or shocked by our results so far.

"I thought that I might play a few tournaments in December, but when I came off the 18th green at the Nedbank Golf Challenge I changed my mind and was glad not to be playing in December, because I have so many thoughts about the team".

Promising young Malaysian Gavin Green, the latest Asian Tour Order of Merit victor, is among a handful on the Asian side playing in the event at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club for the first time.

The pair upstaged India's S.S.P. Chawrasia and Anirban Lahiri courtesy of seven birdies, including a five-foot birdie putt from Fleetwood which sealed the win on the 16th hole.

Buoyed by that win, Phachara Khongwatmai and Hideto Tanihara combined to beat Paul Dunne and Alex Noren 2 and 1 to draw the teams level after going two up at the 12th hole, and maintaining par for the point.

Team Asia has never led at any stage over their continental rivals in the history of the Eurasia Cup but after holding the lead for two days, team captain Arjun Atwal is confident that his team could win when the match conclude on Sunday.

"We're not underestimating this team by any means", said Casey, who won his match with Fleetwood and is representing Europe for the first time in nearly a decade.

"I suspect that we'll go out tomorrow and be ready to play, and foursomes is a very different game", Bjorn said.
