In addition to not having any details on the last page of the passport, the ministry has also chose to differentiate on the basis of ECR status of an individual. Raveesh added that existing passports would continue to remain valid till the date of expiry printed in the passport booklet.
The Narendra Modi government, which usually prefers homogenisation, has chose to move to a two-colour format for personal passports: orange and the existing dark navy blue.
Right now, it is white passports for officials who visit other countries on government work, red for diplomats and blue for others.
"It also included a plan to do away with the last page of passports, which includes address and emigration status of the passport holder".
India saw a rise of 30 percent in demand for passports following the liberalization of passport policies announced on 23 December 2016.
In India, a passport is issued by the President of India for the goal of global travel and serves as a legal proof of Indian citizenship as per the Passports Act (1967).
Congress president Rahul Gandhi today attacked the Modi government over its decision that passport holders requiring emigration check would be given an orange-coloured passport while others will continue to get a blue one, saying it shows the BJP's "discriminatory mindset". The Controller General said that persons obtaining new passports would be issued with the new document while those holding the current passports could use them until the validity ended.
Official Kumar said that the ECR category will be specified in the orange pssports. These are all included in the first page of the passport booklet.
"The decision to keep the last page of the passport blank has been taken" to protect the details contained, he explained. This will make it easier and more efficient during immigration checks. As per Passport Act of India, all passports are valid until the date mentioned there.
